Upsets, Buzzer-Beaters, and Bracket Busts

The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, commonly known as March Madness, is one of the most exciting tournaments in sports. Every single year, millions of fans across the country fill out brackets and try to predict the outcome of every game. The tournament has been around for 87 years, and I believe single elimination, frequent upsets, and player pressure are why no perfect bracket has ever been completed.

Upsets are what make March Madness so special. Lower-seeded teams often beat the higher-seeded favorites. The 12 vs. 5 matchup is where the most upsets occur, as 12 seeds win 35 percent of the time they play 5 seeds. In 2026, No. 12 seed High Point Panthers upset the No. 5 seed Wisconsin Badgers in a thriller that ended in the final second. It goes to show that any team can win on any given day.

As a North Carolina fan, I've seen us get upset a lot in the last couple of years. Last year, we lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide, and this year was no different, as we lost in the first round to the 11th-seeded VCU Rams. Watching UNC blow a 20-point lead in the final ten minutes of the game was so painful and frustrating to watch. Being the higher seed doesn't guarantee you a free win.

Buzzer-beaters are common in March Madness, and with a win-or-go-home on the line, every possession in the final seconds matters. A player who is unknown can make his name known by hitting a clutch shot. In the Elite Eight matchup between Duke and UConn, a new star was revealed in the final seconds. After rallying from a 19-point deficit, UConn capitalized on a late Duke turnover that allowed Braylon Mullins to launch a three-pointer at the buzzer and send Duke home.

Another common aspect of March Madness is bracket busts. Fans spend hours reviewing team statistics, injury reports, matchup tendencies, and the history of the team in March. But every time, they never get everything correct. That isn't a failure of analysis; it's a feature of the tournament. The same forces that produce upsets and buzzer-beaters guarantee that no amount of preparation can fully anticipate what's coming. This is what separates March Madness from league play: in the NBA, a seven-game series rewards depth, experience, and consistency. A single game rewards whoever rises to the moment.

Upsets, buzzer-beaters, and bracket busts aren't flaws in the tournament. They are in the tournament. They're the reason millions of people who haven't watched a college basketball game all season suddenly care deeply about whether a No. 15 seed from a mid-major conference can stay with a powerhouse for 40 minutes. March Madness doesn't promise that the best team wins. It promises that anything can happen. That promise, made fresh every March, is why the tournament endures.
