After years of debate, banter, and arguments, the 2026 WNBA Collective Bargaining
Agreement (CBA) finally gave the players of the WNBA exactly what they’d wished for. In the
previous CBA, the salary cap was 1.5 million dollars in 2025. It is now projected, in the 2026
CBA, to be around 7 million dollars. This includes a monstrous minimal salary increase for the
players. From 62 thousand dollars to now being around 270 thousand dollars. With the maximum
salary able to be 1.4 million dollars. Not only is this a huge step for the WNBA, solving many
conflicts and debates over the years. But, this is the first step to seeing an increase in other
Women’s sports across the nation, potentially even the world. Women’s leagues such as the
National Women's Soccer League, the Professional Women's Hockey League, and the Ladies
Professional Golf Association are all struggling with the same issues that the WNBA did.
Notable Women's soccer stars Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan both have extremely similar
determination regarding equal pay. Megan Rapinoe, in interviews, continuously states,
“We’re
not asking for equal pay for equal work. We’re asking for equal pay for equal play.
” Alex Morgan
chimed in by saying,
“We’ve been fighting for investment in our league, for better salaries, for
better working conditions” (ESPN). With very valid arguments and claims, you’d think
something would be done by now to handle this situation. Finally, with the WNBA breakthrough
in women's sports salaries, there will be a lot of turmoil and pressure for a lot of women’s
professional sports leagues to do the same. Now, with more money in the WNBA and hopefully
other women's sports in the future, there may be a massive drive for female collegiate athletes to
try to go pro. Not only are the players of the WNBA thrilled for this new CBA, but even theWNBA commissioner is: “This Collective Bargaining Agreement represents a defining moment
in the WNBA’s 30-year history and all of women’s professional sports,
” said WNBA
Commissioner Cathy Engelbert. This new CBA opens up a whole new door to female collegiate
basketball players. The possibilities with this new CBA are going to be existential and really
exciting to see come to life.
