The Future of SMU Football

Updated: Oct 10

Southern Methodist University Football is on the rise and it’s no secret. Many consider the current era to be the long-awaited comeback story of the once great SMU. SMU finished their maiden season in the ACC ranked 12th in all of college football by the AP poll. Top ranked programs like SMU are fueled by high level recruits. SMU and their recruiting team are no strangers to attracting the most elite athletes.

In the past year SMU recruiting has made some notable signings that will accentuate an already formidable roster. Some of the top names from the 2027 class include Aljour Miles the number 19th receiver in his class, Evan Goodwin the number 14th ranked offensive tackle, Christian Rhodes the number 13th ranked running back, and Drew Evers the number 28th ranked offensive tackle. This is only a fraction of the 21 hard commits that SMU has signed from the 2027 class.

All these recruits will have an instant impact on the SMU team and their positional groups. Zach Hernandez, a current SMU running-back shared his thoughts on the top recruits committed to SMU. First and foremost, Aljour Miles is the top recruit for SMU for and for good reason. Hernandez describes him as a “reliable contested catch target” who will “add size and physicality” to the wide receiver room. With the loss of Elijah Roberts in the 2025 NFL draft, the Mustangs are looking for another solid down field target. The running back room is in a similar situation with the loss of standout running back Brashard Smith. Christian Rhodes will be another great addition to the roster to fill the void behind Smith. The incoming recruit received high praise from a current running-back Zach Hernandez who said, “Christian Rhodes will bring explosive burst and power to SMU’s backfield, making him a tough downhill runner who can break tackles and change pace”.

Staying on the offensive side of the ball, the SMU offensive line was a strong point for the Mustangs in their highly successful 2024 season. The line was named to the Joe Morrow Award Honor Roll for their toughness, technique, effort, teamwork, consistency, technique and finishing according to SMU. The team looks to continue this strong suit with their two top offensive tackle recruits. First is Evan Goodwin who is described by Hernadez as having a “solid frame with good footwork” and who looks like a “reliable long-term player”. Drew Evers is another top offensive tackle recruit who Hernandez thinks will “bring versatility and strength to SMU’s offensive line” he also mentioned Evers is “capable of playing across spots helping bolster the depth and physicality up front”. Both tackles will be amazing additions but Evan Goodwin is truly an exciting player. He stands at a mountainous 6 foot 7 inches and weighs 325 pounds. His massive frame allows him to bully defensive ends with ease. Despite his size, Goodwin is quick with his feet, opening a world of opportunities for the SMU offensive line.

Southern Methodist University is on their way to a new golden era, fueled by elite recruits. With a top 15 ranking in their first ACC season and a strong incoming 2027 recruiting class, SMU is building a foundation for success. Players like Aljour Miles, Christian Rhodes, Evan Goodwin, and Drew Evers are poised to make an immediate impact, adding to an already impressive roster. College football is recruiting, and the future of Mustang football is looking brighter than ever.
